Project Zomboid: Become Desensitized – Overcome Your Fears

Are you tired of your Project Zomboid survivor cowering in fear at the sight of even a single shambler, despite having carved a bloody path through hordes of the undead? The “Become Desensitized” mod offers a solution, allowing your character to gradually shed their phobias and become a more hardened survivor.

How Desensitization Works

This mod introduces a system where your character can overcome their fear of zombies through sheer experience. After dispatching a significant number of the undead through direct combat (melee or firearms, excluding fire-based kills), a chance to become desensitized will begin to emerge. This chance grows with every zombie you eliminate, pushing your character towards a state of hardened indifference.

Key Features

  • Gradual Desensitization: Your character can develop desensitization after achieving a configurable number of zombie kills.
  • Automatic Desensitization: Reach a higher kill count, and desensitization becomes a certainty.
  • Trait and Occupation Influence: Certain character traits and chosen professions can significantly alter the speed at which desensitization occurs.
  • Phobia Removal: Upon becoming desensitized, mutually exclusive negative traits such as Cowardly, Agoraphobic, Claustrophobic, and Hemophobic are removed, reflecting your character’s newfound resilience.
  • Midnight Chance: The opportunity to gain the desensitized trait is assessed each in-game midnight.

Customization and Compatibility

The “Become Desensitized” mod is designed with flexibility in mind. Key values, such as the kill counts required for partial and automatic desensitization, can be adjusted within the Project Zomboid sandbox options. This allows for a tailored experience to fit your preferred playstyle. The mod is also designed to be compatible with existing saves, though initial settings may revert to default values for backwards compatibility.

Traits and Professions That Matter

Your character’s pre-existing conditions and background can play a crucial role in their journey to becoming desensitized. Positive traits like “Brave” and “Hunter” can accelerate the process, while negative traits such as “Cowardly,” “Agoraphobic,” “Claustrophobic,” “Hemophobic,” and “Pacifist” may hinder it. Similarly, certain occupations, including Police Officer, Fireman, Park Ranger, Security Guard, Doctor, and Nurse, are considered to have a higher propensity for developing this hardened mindset.

For those seeking a more seasoned survivor, the “Become Desensitized” mod offers a compelling progression system that rewards experience and resilience.
