Project Zomboid: The Only Cure – A Desperate Choice

In the grim world of Project Zomboid, a bite from the undead is often a death sentence. But what if there was another way? The Only Cure mod introduces a brutal, yet potentially life-saving, mechanic: amputation. When the inevitable happens, and you find yourself infected, you are presented with a stark choice. Will you accept your fate, or will you take drastic action to sever the infected limb and fight for another day?

The Grim Reality of Infection

Discovering a bite mark is a moment of pure dread for any Project Zomboid survivor. Traditionally, this meant a countdown to inevitable transformation. The Only Cure shatters this convention by offering a desperate gamble. With the right tools and a strong stomach, you can attempt to remove the infected body part, potentially halting the spread of the virus. This adds a new layer of high-stakes decision-making to the survival experience.

Amputation: The Procedure

Performing an amputation is not for the faint of heart. You’ll need a suitable tool, such as a saw, axe, or machete. By interacting with the tool and selecting the afflicted limb, you can initiate the gruesome process. The mod cleverly incorporates existing items::

  • Bandages and stitches can be automatically used to improve your chances of survival after the amputation.
  • A tourniquet can be applied to mitigate blood loss and damage during the critical post-amputation phase.

Successfully amputating a limb may also grant you skill points for the affected side, leading to faster actions over time. However, losing an upper arm will prevent the equipping of any prosthetic replacements.

Healing and Prosthetics

After the trauma of amputation, the healing process begins. You can monitor the status of your wound through the Health Panel and should regularly clean it with bandages to aid cicatrization. While a limb may not be fully healed, it’s still possible to equip prosthetic limbs, though this carries the risk of random bleeding. The mod introduces two types of craftable or findable prosthetics:

  • Hook Prosthesis
  • Arm Prosthesis

While a Hook Prosthesis is functional, expect actions to take longer. Equipping any prosthetic limb will gradually increase your Prosthesis Familiarity skill, making subsequent actions quicker and more efficient.

Compatibility and Support

The Only Cure has been rebuilt from the ground up for seamless integration and future expansions, designed to feel as close to a vanilla mechanic as possible. It fully supports both single-player and multiplayer gameplay. While Host Mode might function, it is officially unsupported. For those facing issues or discovering bugs, reporting them on GitHub is encouraged.
