[TEMP FIX] Diseases Restored

Restoring Frostbite Mechanics in Oxygen Not Included

Players diving into the challenging environments of Oxygen Not Included might have encountered an unexpected issue with the “Diseases Restored” mod, particularly on colder asteroids. This unofficial patch addresses a critical bug that unfairly impacted Duplicants dealing with frostbite, ensuring a more balanced and predictable experience.

Understanding the Frostbite Glitch

The original “Diseases Restored” mod introduced a compelling frostbite mechanic, adding another layer of survival challenge. However, a bug emerged on environments like Frosty Planet that caused this mechanic to disregard crucial protective measures. Specifically, the frostbite damage failed to acknowledge the “Frost Protection” trait possessed by some Duplicants, nor did it properly factor in the temporary resistance granted by heaters. This meant Duplicants could suffer freezing damage even when adequately protected, leading to frustrating and unintended consequences.

Key Fixes Implemented

This temporary patch focuses on resolving the frostbite calculation issues:

  • The base threshold for frostbite has been adjusted to ensure the mechanic triggers at more appropriate temperature levels.
  • A temperature buffer has been introduced into the frostbite damage calculation. This crucial change allows Duplicants’ natural frost protection and the effects of heaters to correctly mitigate and reduce incoming freezing damage.

The Result: Fairer Cold-Weather Survival

With these adjustments, Duplicants equipped with frost protection or positioned near heaters will no longer experience frostbite damage in moderately cold conditions, such as temperatures around -24°C. The intended behavior of extreme cold still posing a significant threat remains, ensuring that survival challenges are maintained. This fix brings the frostbite mechanic back in line with the game’s protective systems, making survival in colder biomes more manageable and fair.

This community-driven patch is intended as a stopgap measure until the original mod is officially updated. The creators of this fix emphasize that all original code, design, and assets belong to Peter Han and the Reimagination Team, and encourage continued support for their work.
