As Mastema, survival hinges on a constant balancing act with your health. Every opportunity, from treasure rooms to shops and even the celestial or infernal realms, demands a sacrifice of your very life force. Will you exercise restraint, hoarding your health for more promising future rewards, or succumb to temptation and risk everything for immediate gain? Mastema’s journey is one of difficult decisions and the ever-present threat of spiritual and physical ruin.

Mastema enters the fray equipped with a distinct set of abilities designed to alter your approach to the game. Standard item rooms are reimagined as “red treasure rooms,” consistently offering an extra, unseen item even when not traversing the alternative paths. The “Duality” ability grants you the power to choose between Devil and Angel rooms from the outset, with each encounter providing an additional, beneficial twist. However, Mastema’s most crucial asset is the “Consecrated Heart,” a life-giving tool that serves as his primary means of replenishing health and bolstering his strength.

Embrace the Darkness: Tainted Mastema

With the arrival of Tainted Mastema, the character’s allegiance shifts dramatically. His soul, now fully corrupted by temptation, abandons his divine duties and pledges fealty to the devil. In return for this dark pact, his tattered wings are restored, and he gains formidable new powers, albeit with a significant drawback.

Tainted Mastema’s interaction with items is radically transformed. Instead of paying with health, he accumulates “broken hearts” upon acquiring new items. While this may seem like a dire predicament, his “Desecrated Heart” ability offers a reprieve, removing a broken heart with each use. The Desecrated Heart can be activated even before it’s fully charged, presenting a risky gamble to accelerate the healing process. This haste, however, could lead to unforeseen and detrimental consequences.
