Penitence: Reshaping the Curse Experience in Slay the Spire
Tired of curses feeling like nothing more than a deck clog? The Penitence mod for Slay the Spire introduces a dynamic new layer to curse management, transforming these typically detrimental cards into interesting strategic choices. This mod aims to make curse acquisition, often a dreaded outcome of event choices, a more appealing and engaging aspect of your runs.
A Spectrum of Curse Modifications
Penitence injects a unique modifier into every curse that enters your deck, providing alternative methods for their removal beyond the usual campfire or shop interaction. These modifiers come in two flavors: light and harsh, with events often specifying which type you’ll encounter. Light modifiers are generally designed to be the preferred removal path, while harsh modifiers might push you towards spending resources or taking calculated risks.
Unlocking New Curse Removal Avenues
The mod introduces eight distinct modifier types, each offering a novel way to deal with curses:
- Greedy: Pay gold during combat to banish the curse.
- Sticky: Play the curse card in combat; it will eventually be removed.
- Ritual: Play the curse to deal damage. If it’s the killing blow, the curse is removed.
- Bloody: Inflict sufficient damage with the curse in hand to remove it.
- Sacrificial: Suffer enough damage after drawing the curse to cleanse your deck.
- Thirsty: Discard valuable potions to banish the curse.
- Broken: Upgrade the curse at a campfire, which will then remove it.
- Hoarding: Sacrifice one of your hard-earned relics to get rid of the curse.
Strategic Depth and Event Integration
The introduction of these modifiers significantly alters how players will approach events that offer curses. Some events are specifically tuned to be more likely to bestow harsh modifiers, adding an extra layer of risk assessment. Curses acquired outside of these specific event contexts have a 50% chance of being either harsh or light. It’s important to note that special curses, such as Necronomicurse, Curse of the Bell, and Ascender’s Bane, remain unaffected by these modifications, preserving their unique challenges.
Penitence breathes new life into the curse mechanic, encouraging players to think creatively and adapt their strategies. No longer are curses just dead weight; they can become tools, challenges, or calculated risks, leading to a more varied and exciting Slay the Spire experience.
