Strategic Forts: Expand Your Empire in Civilization VI
Revolutionize your approach to territorial control and defense in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI with the Strategic Forts mod. This comprehensive gameplay enhancement transforms the humble fort into a powerful tool for expansion, strategically claiming valuable territory and dictating the flow of conflict across the map.
Claiming Strategic Territory
The core of the Strategic Forts mod lies in its new land-claiming mechanic. Once a fort is constructed, it automatically claims ownership of the tile it occupies and all adjacent tiles within a one-tile radius. This newfound ability opens up a wealth of strategic possibilities:
- Secure vital strategic or luxury resources without the need for immediate city founding.
- Prevent rival civilizations from establishing settlements in critical choke points or encroaching too close to your existing cities.
- Block enemy military unit movement, especially for civilizations with whom you do not have open borders.
- Establish defensive strongholds on the front lines, providing advantages for unit healing and defense.
The Expansionist Unit
Introducing a new player-controlled unit, the Expansionist, available from the Early Empire era. This unit possesses a single charge to construct a fort. Designed exclusively for human players to prevent excessive AI fort spam, the Expansionist is an initially costly investment that scales in price with each subsequent unit built. Its early availability offers a compelling choice: sacrifice immediate production for significant early territorial control.
Enhanced Defensive Capabilities
Beyond land acquisition, the Strategic Forts mod bolsters the defensive power of various structures. All standard Forts, Roman Forts, the Great Wall, and Alcazars now provide increased benefits:
- A significant boost to unit healing and sight range.
- The ability to detect hidden enemy units.
- Increased defensive strength for units within their bounds.
Furthermore, forts can now be constructed directly on top of resources, forests, and jungles, though building on a resource tile will consume it. Marsh and floodplains remain unbuildable tiles.
Dynamic Fort Mechanics
The mod introduces dynamic changes to fort ownership and territory based on in-game events. Pillaging a fort by an enemy land unit can result in the attacker claiming both the fort and surrounding tiles. Coastal raids or the use of powerful weaponry can lead to the loss of claimed territory if the fort is not adequately garrisoned. Entering a pillaged fort as a combat unit will repair and claim it, along with adjacent tiles. Capturing or liberating cities also has specific rules regarding fort ownership, ensuring that strategic emplacements remain crucial assets in your ongoing struggle for dominance in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
