The Spark of Prairie Fire
Mao Zedong’s leader ability, “Spark of Prairie Fire,” fundamentally alters how you interact with your empire. Improvements gain significant yield bonuses when adjacent to other improvements or districts, encouraging dense and interconnected development. Furthermore, units resting on improvements receive crucial healing and exert significant Loyalty pressure, making your infrastructure a powerful tool for expansion and control.
This ability also dramatically enhances your military capabilities. Your armies will bypass enemy zones of control and negate terrain-related combat penalties, enabling swift and decisive maneuvers. When fighting within your own territory or in a captured city with low Loyalty, your units become even more formidable, doubling terrain-based combat bonuses. Crucially, conquering cities will no longer result in population loss, and the destructive acts of pillaging and razing are forbidden, promoting a more sustainable form of conquest.
Unique Units and Improvements
The arrival of Mao Zedong introduces two powerful new modern-era units for China:
- People’s Liberation Army: Replacing the standard Infantry, this unit can be purchased with Faith and boasts unique combat bonuses when fighting on your territory or in cities with low Loyalty. Its production cost is also reduced based on the number of “Base Areas” in the city.
- Guerrilla: This reconnaissance unit, upgradeable from the Ranger, possesses the unique ability to construct the “Base Area” improvement.
The “Base Area” is a versatile improvement that can be built on any terrain. When built within your own borders, it boosts the yields of adjacent improvements and generates Faith. When placed outside your territory, it provides vital healing to units stationed upon it, scaling with the number of surrounding improvements.
