Command Your Own Privateers in Civilization VI with the Mercenary Mod

Are you looking to add a new dimension to your military campaigns in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI? The Mercenary / Mercenary Fleet mod introduces a unique system for acquiring and utilizing specialized units that can turn the tide of war – or become a dangerous rogue element.

Unlock a New Era of Warfare

This mod allows you to recruit powerful land and naval mercenary units, but with a twist. Unlike standard units, these forces cannot be produced through traditional means. Instead, they are exclusively available for hire with Gold. This gold-sink mechanic introduces a strategic layer, forcing players to carefully manage their finances to field these elite troops. The Mercenary civic unlocks access to these unique units, making their acquisition a mid-to-late game consideration.

Plunder and Profit

The core gameplay loop of the Mercenary mod revolves around aggressive raiding and rewarding combat. Land mercenaries excel at quickly devastating enemy territory, requiring only one movement point to pillage. Similarly, mercenary fleets can launch coastal raids without expending any movement, allowing for swift and unexpected assaults. The spoils of war are directly proportional to your success: every unit vanquished by your mercenaries grants you Gold equal to 50% of the defeated unit’s base Strength. This creates a self-sustaining economic model where your military actions directly fund your continued operations.

Strategic Advantages and Risks

  • Acquire elite land and naval units through Gold purchase only, unlocked by the Mercenaries civic.
  • Land mercenaries can pillage enemy tiles with just 1 Movement.
  • Mercenary Fleets can perform Coastal Raids without consuming Movement points.
  • Earn Gold equal to 50% of a defeated unit’s base Strength upon their destruction.
  • Military and Harbor buildings enhance mercenary Strength and hiring cost.

To further bolster your mercenary forces, investing in Military and Harbor buildings will increase their Strength and, consequently, their hiring cost. However, this mod also introduces an element of unpredictability. You have the option to release an unwanted mercenary contract. Doing so effectively turns the unit over to the barbarians, transforming your former asset into a potential threat that could even target you.

Important Considerations

It’s crucial to understand the implications of releasing a mercenary. Once released, these units cannot be controlled and may attack any civilization, including their former employer. This decision is irreversible. For the most stable experience, starting a new game is recommended when installing this mod. Support is available in Japanese, English, and Simplified Chinese.
