Happy Districts – Appeal Rebalanced

Happy Districts: Rebalancing Appeal for a More Engaging Civilization VI

In Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, the environment plays a crucial role, especially with the introduction of Appeal in the Gathering Storm expansion. However, its impact has often been confined to niche strategies. The Happy Districts mod seeks to rectify this, making Appeal a more central and influential mechanic for all players, not just those pursuing specific victory conditions. This mod injects new life into city management by directly linking district Appeal to citizen happiness, ensuring that a beautiful environment translates into tangible benefits for your burgeoning empire.

Reworked Appeal Mechanics

The core of Happy Districts lies in its re-imagining of how Appeal affects your cities. Now, the Appeal rating of tiles where your districts are built directly influences the Amenities your city receives. This creates a dynamic where thoughtful city planning and careful district placement are rewarded with increased citizen satisfaction. A city flourishing in a highly appealing area will naturally experience greater happiness, boosting productivity and stability.

Key Features and Changes

Happy Districts introduces a suite of impactful changes to the Appeal system:

  • District Amenity Bonuses: Every district now contributes to your city’s Amenities based on its tile’s Appeal. Breathtaking Appeal (+4) grants a +1 Amenity bonus, while Uninviting (-2) incurs a -1 penalty, and Disgusting (-4) results in a significant -2 Amenity penalty.
  • Floodplain Adjustments: Districts located on floodplains are now treated as if their Appeal were one point lower, mitigating the harsh penalties previously associated with these often-present tiles. This workaround allows for more flexibility in city placement without sacrificing Appeal potential.
  • Environmental Appeal Rework: Numerous environmental features have had their Appeal values adjusted to create more strategic opportunities.
    • Floodplains no longer reduce the Appeal of adjacent tiles.
    • Unimproved Forests now provide +1 Appeal after researching Conservation.
    • Marshes offer +1 Appeal post-Conservation, making them viable for National Parks.
    • Reefs now grant +1 Appeal.
    • Volcanoes provide -1 Appeal to balance their inherent mountain Appeal.
    • Geothermal Fissures grant +1 Appeal unless improved by a Geothermal Plant.
    • The Eiffel Tower’s global Appeal bonus has been adjusted to +1.
  • Civilization Balancing: The mod includes adjustments to specific civilizations. Kongo and Korea face slight nerfs due to their reliance on high-Appeal features, while Australia experiences a compensatory nerf, with its floodplains and marshes offering reduced Appeal to balance their existing strengths.

With Happy Districts, the environmental considerations in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI are brought to the forefront, offering a richer and more interconnected gameplay experience. Dive into a world where a beautiful landscape directly fuels your civilization’s prosperity.
