Gedemo Richelieu

Gedemo’s Cardinal Richelieu: A New Leader for France in Civilization VI

France receives a formidable new leader in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI with the addition of Cardinal Richelieu. This mod introduces a unique playstyle centered around espionage, naval power, and resilient cities, offering a fresh strategic depth for players who enjoy a more subtle and defensive approach to conquest.

Leader Trait: Day of the Dupes

Richelieu’s signature ability, “Day of the Dupes,” significantly bolsters his strategic capabilities. Upon discovering Theology, a Spy is immediately generated in his Capital City, starting with the crucial “Disguise” Promotion. This provides an early advantage in the espionage game, allowing for immediate intelligence gathering or sabotage. Furthermore, cities with Shipyards gain a valuable +1 Production and +2 Gold bonus. Perhaps most impactful is the +33% Production bonus towards Naval Melee units in cities with a founded religion, synergizing well with a religious strategy and a focus on naval dominance. Crucially, cities with a Harbor District, including the iconic La Rochelle, are immune to being put under siege, making them incredibly difficult for enemies to capture through conventional means.

Agenda: Red Eminence

Richelieu’s agenda, “Red Eminence,” reflects his historical ambition and cunning. He aims to rapidly establish a robust spy network and a strong military. Consequently, he dislikes civilizations that actively condemn or work against espionage and military buildup, encouraging players to maintain a covert and powerful presence on the world stage.

Key Mod Features:

  • Richelieu as an alternate leader for France, replacing Catherine de Medici.
  • “Day of the Dupes” trait grants an early spy, boosts Shipyards, and enhances naval production in religious cities.
  • Cities with Harbors are immune to sieges, offering unparalleled defensive capabilities.
  • “Red Eminence” agenda encourages espionage and military development.
  • Compatibility with Gathering Storm, Rise and Fall, and the base game (Rise and Fall expansion required).
  • Support for various popular map mods, including Ynaemp and Zobtzler maps.
  • Available in both English and French.

This mod adds significant strategic variety for France, rewarding players who can effectively leverage espionage, build strong naval forces, and fortify their coastal cities. The immunity to sieges, in particular, opens up entirely new defensive and offensive possibilities for players commanding Richelieu’s France.
