Edo Castle (World Wonder)
Edo Castle: A Bastion of Power in Civilization VI
Step back in time and immerse yourself in the grandeur of feudal Japan with the Edo Castle World Wonder mod for Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. This meticulously crafted addition brings a pivotal piece of Japanese history to your game, offering unique strategic advantages and a deep connection to the era of the Shogunate.
The Rise of the Shogunate
Edo Castle, originally Hirayama Castle, rose to prominence in 1457. It became the seat of power for Tokugawa Ieyasu, who unified Japan and established the Tokugawa Shogunate. For over 265 years, this formidable structure served as the heart of Japanese governance, shaping the nation’s destiny until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. This mod allows you to harness the legacy of that power.
Strategic Advantages of Edo Castle
Building Edo Castle adjacent to your City Center, unlocked at the Gunpowder technology, provides significant benefits. It grants a powerful Shōgun unit and two Musketmen, bolstering your early defensive capabilities. If your city boasts a Shipyard, you’ll also receive an Atakemaru naval unit and two Frigates, extending your reach and influence.
Key features of Edo Castle include:
- +2 Amenities and +6 Gold per turn.
- The defensive bonuses equivalent to a Fort improvement.
- Access to the unique Genna Enbu project.
The Shōgun and Atakemaru: Instruments of Power
The mod introduces two unique units:
The Shōgun
This heavy cavalry unit is a force to be reckoned with. When damaged, it possesses the unique ability to retreat with 1 HP to Edo Castle or your Capital, ensuring its continued strategic value. While not damaged, land units within 2 tiles benefit from increased Movement and Combat Strength. Upon completion of the Genna Enbu project, the Shōgun transforms, offering substantial city buffs instead of direct combat.
The Atakemaru
This imposing naval unit is designed for both offense and defense. It can engage in melee and ranged attacks, and even coastal raids. Like the Shōgun, it can retreat with 1 HP to the nearest Shipyard if defeated. The Atakemaru enhances formation combat and aids embarked/disembarked land units. Post-Genna Enbu project, it provides significant buffs to your Harbors.
The Genna Enbu project itself is a game-changer, bestowing three Governor titles upon completion and unlocking the enhanced supportive capabilities of both the Shōgun and Atakemaru, granting Amenities, Culture, and Loyalty to nearby tiles.
