A New Leader Emerges: Mansui of The Starving in Civilization VI
Prepare to lead your civilization through hardship and resilience with the introduction of Mansui, a compelling new leader for Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. This mod brings a unique playstyle focused on survival and strategic adaptation, challenging players to manage scarcity while striving for growth. Mansui’s narrative is rooted in the struggles of famine and arduous journeys, understanding the profound impact of even a single grain of food on a city’s fate.
Unveiling Mansui’s Leader Abilities
Mansui’s core strength lies in her ability to foster growth even in the leanest of times. Her unique ability, “Survival,” provides a significant boost to all city yields – Production, Science, Culture, Gold, and Faith – when a city achieves a food surplus of 3 or more each turn. This encourages players to prioritize food production and careful city planning.
Complementing her leader ability is the unique project, “The Starving.” Undertaking this project comes at a cost, resulting in the loss of one population in the city. This adds a layer of difficult decision-making, balancing immediate needs with long-term population management.
Unique Units and Districts
The “Liang” unit is Mansui’s unique replacement for the Scout. While it cannot be upgraded to the Skirmisher or purchased with Gold or Faith, the Liang boasts a base combat strength of 15 and ignores enemy zone of control. Its combat strength increases by 10 every era, and it gains an additional +10 combat strength when fighting alone and unengaged by enemy units. This makes the Liang a potent early-game unit, especially when used for reconnaissance and tactical engagements.
Mansui also introduces the “Public Bathhouse,” which replaces the Entertainment Complex. With a 25% reduction in building cost, this district offers a unique artifact, “Fragment of the Tongue,” which cannot be moved or traded but provides an additional +2 Science and +2 Culture.
Literary and Cultural Impact
The mod also features “Ji Ling,” Mansui’s unique Great Writer, automatically granted upon entering the Industrial Era. Ji Ling’s works have a dual impact:
- The “The Starving” and “Burying Flowers” branches grant all cities in the empire +3 Amenities.
- The “Half” and “Wandering Refugees” branches impose a -2 Amenity penalty on all cities.
Players also have the option to eliminate Ji Ling, permanently granting all cities in the empire +1 Amenity.
This mod requires the Gathering Storm expansion and is presented in Simplified Chinese. It is recommended to start a new game to fully experience the intended gameplay. Be aware that compatibility issues may arise with large-scale balance mods, unit overhaul mods, or those that modify city output interfaces.
