Fortify Your Fortress: Introducing Moats to Project Zomboid

Looking to elevate your base defense in Project Zomboid? This mod introduces a classic, time-tested defensive structure: the moat. Now you can dig your own trenches to help keep the undead at bay, adding a unique strategic layer to your survival efforts.

Digging Your Defenses

To begin constructing your moat, you’ll need a trusty shovel. Simply interact with natural ground tiles and select the “Dig Moats” option. These dug areas are initially walkable, allowing for easy navigation around your perimeter. However, with the passage of time and the arrival of rain, these ditches will gradually fill with water. This collected water is considered tainted but can be repurposed for various survival tasks, such as washing or watering your crops. If a contiguous tile already holds water, your moat can even draw from it, accelerating the filling process. Once fully submerged, your moat transforms into a standard water tile, providing a more significant obstacle to wandering zombies.

Customization and Sandbox Options

This mod offers several ways to tailor the moat experience to your preferred playstyle. Within the sandbox settings, you can choose to enable “shores” around your newly constructed water tiles, similar to a swimming pool aesthetic. This can help make submerged paths more visible but may interfere with fishing opportunities. You also have control over the speed at which your moats fill with water. Additionally, you can choose to disable certain vanilla digging conditions, offering greater flexibility in where and how you can construct your defenses.

Key Features at a Glance:

  • Construct functional moats using shovels.
  • Moats fill with rainwater over time, providing usable, albeit tainted, water.
  • Moats can connect to existing water sources for faster filling.
  • Transforms into a standard water tile once full, acting as a blocking obstacle.
  • Sandbox options for shore aesthetics, fill speed, and digging condition overrides.

Important Considerations

While this mod offers a robust new feature, a few limitations are worth noting, particularly for multiplayer. Certain floor tile types may not blend perfectly with shores, and in multiplayer scenarios, players might occasionally be masked by floor moat tiles. Additionally, water tiles created from a completed moat might not update their visual appearance until a relog in multiplayer. The mod is designed to be added or removed from your mod list at any time, offering great flexibility.
