Maxwell, The Puppet Mastermind: Command Your Shadows in Don’t Starve Together
Unleash Maxwell’s true potential as the ultimate strategist in Don’t Starve Together with the “Maxwell, The Puppet Mastermind” mod. This comprehensive overhaul transforms Maxwell into a distant commander, allowing him to orchestrate his shadow minions with unparalleled finesse. Say goodbye to Maxwell getting his hands dirty; this mod is all about pulling the strings from afar.
Mastering the Codex Umbra
The heart of this mod lies in the empowered Codex Umbra. No longer just a crafting tool, it becomes Maxwell’s primary interface for controlling his shadow army. When equipped, you can directly command your puppets by right-clicking on them to issue “Wait” or “Follow” orders. Furthermore, right-clicking on any interactable object can task nearby puppets of the appropriate type to work it, though this precise control comes at the cost of sanity, reflecting the mental strain of bending shadows to your will.
The Codex Umbra also grants access to a powerful Minion Menu, accessible by right-clicking the Codex or pressing ‘Z’. This menu provides a centralized hub for managing your entire shadow force:
- Command Wait: Orders all active shadow puppets to halt their current actions.
- Recall: Instantly teleports all puppets back to Maxwell’s side, resuming their following behavior.
- Imprison: Temporarily unsummons all puppets, saving them for later without expending your total puppet limit.
- Release: Summons any imprisoned puppets back into service.
This menu also allows for direct conjuring of new shadow puppets, eliminating the need to place the Codex on the ground for crafting.
Shadow Puppet Innovations
Beyond direct commands, this mod significantly enhances the existing shadow puppets and introduces three new specialized types:
New Shadow Puppets
- Shadow Servant: Acts as Maxwell’s extended reach, capable of carrying items and harvesting basic resources from a distance. Be mindful, as carrying items incurs a passive sanity drain.
- Shadow Guardian: A formidable defender that can taunt enemies, drawing their aggression and protecting Maxwell and other puppets.
- Shadow Sailor: Essential for maritime endeavors, these puppets can row, manage sails, operate pumps, and even perform repairs at sea.
All shadow puppets now boast improved health regeneration, reduced damage from single hits, and gain speed buffs alongside Maxwell. They also maintain their tasks regardless of distance and update the map, functioning as living Ocuvigils.
Shadow Combat and Crafting
The Codex Umbra is not just for management; it can also be used offensively. Targeting shadow creatures initiates a unique combat sequence where Maxwell must collect spawned shadow orbs to unleash powerful attacks, with enhanced drops like Nightmare Fuel. For non-shadow foes, the Codex offers a ranged attack, albeit with a significant sanity cost.
Maxwell’s crafting abilities are also expanded. By studying the Codex Umbra near a Prestihatitator or Shadow Manipulator, he can permanently reduce the sanity and material costs of conjuring shadow items, with a maximum of two such permanent reductions available.
Embracing his role as a mastermind, Maxwell’s inherent weaknesses are amplified while his sanity management is improved. He becomes less effective in direct physical labor like chopping and mining, but his sanity pool and regeneration are boosted, and he can consume Nightmare Fuel to recover mental fortitude. This mod truly redefines how Maxwell players approach survival, focusing on strategic delegation and remote command.
