Slow War & Fortress Overhaul for Civilization VI

Experience a dramatic shift in the late game of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI with the Slow War & Fortress Overhaul mod. This comprehensive modification reimagines warfare, emphasizing prolonged sieges, formidable city defenses, and a more strategic approach to military campaigns.

Key Gameplay Adjustments

The mod introduces several core changes designed to create a more challenging and engaging experience:

  • Dynamic Unit Costs: Military unit production costs escalate significantly as eras progress. Building large armies in the Industrial era and beyond will require substantial economic and production investment, curbing the ability to rapidly churn out units.
  • Nuclear Annihilation: Say goodbye to nuclear weapons. All nuclear research and delivery projects are removed, completely prohibiting their use.
  • Fortified Cities: City centers and their associated districts, including Encampments, lose their ranged attack capabilities. Defenses are now focused on deterring attackers rather than acting as offensive turrets.
  • Reinforced Walls: All levels of city walls are substantially strengthened, boasting increased hit points and city defense combat strength. The new “Steel Walls” technology requires dedicated production to build, replacing the automatic upgrade and ensuring modern defenses are earned.
  • Garrisoned Unit Restrictions: Ranged land units, siege units, and naval units with ranged attacks stationed within a walled city center will have their range limited to one tile. These units will also suffer retaliatory damage when attacking, preventing risk-free attacks from behind fortifications.
  • Defensive Bonuses: Cities with walls provide a combat strength bonus to friendly units within the city center and the surrounding tile, allowing for more effective defensive formations.
  • Smarter AI: The AI will prioritize building advanced walls, standard city buildings, and maintaining larger land and naval forces. Their tendency to repeatedly engage in city projects or overproduce aircraft is reduced.

Extended Siege Mechanics

When combined with the “Siege and Morale” mod, this overhaul further enhances the siege experience. Siege combat effectiveness per turn is increased, and siege benefits apply to both the city center and its associated Encampments. Coastal cities can now be subjected to land-based blockades, requiring attackers to control all accessible land entrances to begin a siege.

Vision and Positioning

This mod aims to slow down mid-to-late game expansion, making walls a truly defensive asset, extending the duration and importance of sieges, and highlighting the value of siege equipment, logistics, and superior troop numbers. Conventional warfare remains the decisive factor in modern conflicts.
